The Secret…

…to a good life is to give more than you take…

This drawing came to me while thinking of the Rev. Larry Bryant(1912-2009), who served in South America as a missionary for 35 years, giving selflessly of himself to those in need. He worked with local indian tribes, and in seminaries in Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador and Peru.

He was a father of five, a district superintendent, a teacher, a preacher, and had a quiet humility that drew many to him.

He supported his wife Eunice in becoming a Rev. and Dr. herself who in turn wrote many books on ethics, in spanish.

He was also my Grandpa, and he died in February. I was lucky to spend an afternoon with him before he passed on- coming directly to the hospital from my flight home from Argentina.

Grandpa, thank you for teaching us how to give, however poor our attempts to follow in your soft and humble steps.

Jeremy – you don’t know me but I called your grandpa Uncle Lawrence. He is my dear grandma’s (Mary) brother. Growing up we did not get to see Uncle Lawrence & Aunt Eunice often because they were usually living in another country. So when they were home on furlough, I always looked forward to seeing them and hearing stories. They both made an impression on my life with their genuineness. I have enjoyed getting to know your mother now online and learning about her family. I just wanted to let you know that this post “The Secret…” moved me to tears. What a beautiful tribute to such a great man. Thank you for sharing.

    Jeremy,
Even as a little boy, you had a great imagination and very creative, even on the church tables and doors. Those days will be remembered to be treasured, as your Grandfather and Grandmother in the Church.
May god continue to bless your ministry of Art.

    Jeremy,
I knew your grandparents, Larry & Eunice when she was teaching at ENC. I have enormous respect for both of them. I met you when I visited NTS with your grandmother and stayed in your home while I was a senior in college. Your art and especially this piece inspired by Larry communicate enormous depth. Thank you.

Your art piece is very unusual Jeremy and represents Dad well. In his quiet way Dad was a giving person. Not only did he help build churces and a Bible school, but he tried to improve the food the people ate. He loved to talk to people one on one about the Lord and give them a chance to accept Jesus into their life. What a dad! I think of him every day and would love to see how he’s worshiping God before the throne!

  10. Jer,

Man, I had to fight back the tears on this one.

    Thanks for sharing.

My grandpa passed away in ’05, and I still miss him.

Your best ‘red doodle’ yet, I’d love to see what you could do with this as a larger scale work.
